The Compass Scheme: 50 Years of Guidance and Protection

The story of the Compass Insurance Scheme begins in 1976, when the concept was first introduced at the NFSO Conference in April. Later that summer, the scheme was formally announced in the July/August edition of the National Federation for Site Operators (NFSO). From the outset, Compass was designed to provide tailored insurance protection for caravan and holiday park operators, offering specialist cover where the mainstream market often fell short.

A defining moment came in 1983 with the introduction of the Compass name. Derived from Complete Park and Site Security, the name captured the scheme’s purpose: providing all round protection and reassurance while helping park operators confidently navigate risk. The Compass identity reinforced its role not just as an insurance product, but as a dependable guide for members.

The following year, 1984, marked the official launch of the Compass brand. Revealed in the January/February issue of the NFSO Journal, the scheme’s distinctive hand logo symbolised guidance, care, and protection. To commemorate the occasion, a specially commissioned Minton hand was presented, creating a lasting physical symbol of Compass’s commitment to supporting members.

In 1986, the NFSO rebranded as the British Holiday & Home Parks Association (BH&HPA). Compass continued seamlessly alongside the association, remaining a trusted insurance solution for members during a period of growing professionalism and change across the sector.

Nature would soon test the resilience of both the industry and the scheme. In October 1987, the Great Storm struck the UK, becoming a moment that highlighted Compass’s strength and commitment. More than 2,500 claims were handled, with payouts exceeding £3 million*. The storm’s wider economic impact was estimated at £2 billion. Compass’s response during this time reinforced its reputation for reliability during crisis.

The UK faced further extreme weather in 1990, when Cyclone Daria brought wind gusts of up to 104 mph, causing an estimated £3.37 billion in economic damage*. Once again, these events underscored the importance of robust insurance protection for park operators.

Innovation returned to the forefront in 1996 with the launch of Family Fleet. This all‑in‑one motor insurance solution covered members, their families, and employees, combining protected no‑claims bonuses, cover for private and commercial vehicles, courtesy car provision, and an enhanced repairer scheme. The product reflected Compass’s understanding of the practical realities faced by park businesses.

A major change in stewardship arrived in 2018, when Binnacle was established to take over the management of the Compass Scheme. The name carried deliberate meaning: a binnacle is the built‑in housing that protects a ship’s compass, echoing the scheme’s long‑standing role in safeguarding members while guiding them through uncertainty. Binnacle later rebranded as Bspoke Lifestyle, the company that manages Compass today.

Severe weather once again dominated headlines in 2023, when Storms Babet and Ciarán battered the UK. Together, the storms resulted in insurance losses exceeding £560 Million*. Storm Babet saw wind gusts reach 115 mph, followed closely by Storm Ciarán with winds of up to 81 mph, reaffirming the continuing relevance of specialist protection for the parks sector.

Looking ahead to 2026, Compass enters its milestone 50th year with refreshed branding, aligning with the BH&HPA’s transition to the Holiday and Residential Parks Association (HARPA). Half a century after its launch, the Compass Scheme remains true to its name, continuing to guide and protect leisure and holiday park operators through changing landscapes, challenges, and opportunities.
